Eczema

Eczema refers to group of conditions that cause the skin to become inflamed and irritated. The word ‘Eczema’ is derived from a greek word ‘Ekzem’ meaning to boil out.

It has three stages –

  1. Acute : characterized by erythema, edema, vesicles, oozing and crusting.
  2. Sub acute: redness, scaling and fissuring.
  3. Chronic : dry, fissured and thickened skin.

Causes:

  1. Genetic predisposition.
  2. Allergic conditions e.g. asthma.
  3. Irritants such as soaps and detergents.
  4. Microbial allergens.

Treatment:

  1. The main aim of the treatment is not to cure the disease but control the disease.
  2. Counseling, avoidance of triggures forms the cornerstone of management.
  3. Emollients, moisturizing creams are usually recommended to restore the compromised skin barrier.
  4. For moderate to severe cases, a combination of topical and oral medication is necessary for optimal outcomes.
