Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is a chronically relapsing skin disorder with genetic predisposition characterized by varying degree of pruritus and inflammation of skin.

It usually manifests in infancy (60%) or childhood (80%).

Risk Factors

  1. Genetic predisposition
  2. Increased exposure to environmental pollutants.
  3. Irritants such as wool, chemicals, soap.
  4. Change in temperature, humidity.
  5. Food allergens.

Clinically, it presents as:

  1. Infantile phase (Birth to 2 years): Erythema, scaling, edema distributed on cheeks, forehead, chin, scalp.
  2. Childhood phase (2 to 12 years): Erythema, scaling, oozing crusting on flexures, elbows, knees, neck, wrists, and ankles
  3. Adult phase (12 years to adult): Lichenification in flexures along with involvement of wrists, ankles, face, and neck eczema.

Treatment:

Treatment is aimed at restoring the skin barrier by adequate use of emollients, controlling acute flares and modulating the immune response by use of topical and systemic medications.
