Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is a chronically relapsing skin disorder with genetic predisposition characterized by varying degree of pruritus and inflammation of skin.

It usually manifests in infancy (60%) or childhood (80%).

Risk Factors

  3. Irritants such as wool, chemicals, soap.
  4. Change in temperature, humidity.
  5. Food allergens.

Clinically, it presents as:

  1. Infantile phase (Birth to 2 years): Erythema, scaling, edema distributed on cheeks, forehead, chin, scalp.
  2. Childhood phase (2 to 12 years): Erythema, scaling, oozing crusting on flexures, elbows, knees, neck, wrists, and ankles
  3. Adult phase (12 years to adult): Lichenification in flexures along with involvement of wrists, ankles, face, and neck eczema.

Treatment is aimed at restoring the skin barrier by adequate use of emollients, controlling acute flares and modulating the immune response by use of topical and systemic medications.
