Melasma

Melasma is a common acquired hyperpigmentary disorder characterized by brownish or grayish pigmentation commonly seen on face. Hyperpigmentation is due to both increased number of melanocytes and increased melanin production.It generally affects the females of reproductive age group

Causes

  1. Genetic predisposition.
  2. Hormonal factors.
  3. UV radiation.
  4. Oral contraceptives pills.

Areas affected: Forehead, nose, upper lip, cheek and chin

Treatment:

  1. Successful management of melasma depends on avoiding precipitating exogenous factors including UV light and visible light..
  2. Regular use of broad spectrum sunscreens are important to enhance the effectiveness of topical therapy and prevention of melasma.
  3. Triple combination cream is the most effective therapy for melasma though there has been a lot of adverse effects when used unsupervised.
